What are Makki Surahs?
Our Holy Quran comprises 114 Surahs of which 89 Surahs are Makki and 25 Surahs are Madani. Makki Surah refers to Surah in which the word KAllA appears. The Surah which is revealed to our Holy Prophet (PBUH) before Hijrah (migration) from MAKKAH to MADINAH refers to MAKKI Surah. Almost 15 Surah are present in Quran, in which the word KALLA appears 33 times.
According to Hanafi Scholars, the Surah in which Sajadah appears refers to Makki. In Makki Surah, the form of address is “O PEOPLE and O CHILDREN OF ADAM”. Usually, MAKKI Surah includes and states belief in ALLAH’s unification, Day of Judgment, good deeds rewarded, and belief in Heaven. The surah started with the word KALLA which means NEVER is considered as MADANI surah.
What are Madani Surahs?
Our Holy Quran is revealed in the time period of twenty-two years and five months. It is comprised of one hundred and fourteen surahs, of which 25 surahs are MADANI. The Surah which is revealed to our Holy Prophet (PBUH) after HIJRAH (migration) from MAKKAH to MADINA refers to MADANI Surah. Usually, the Ayaats and Verses in MADANI Surah are long and descriptive. Usually, the chapters of MADANI surah include social, legal, fundamental, peace, and war rules and obligations. This surah also describes the punishments of the deeds and Jihad-related commands and also describes the status of Munafiq as well.
Usually, the MAKKI Surah is short and states the following beliefs

- Rectifying
- Belief in the unification of ALLAH

- Stories of AMBIYAH
- Belief in the day of judgment

The Surah which is revealed to our Holy Prophet (PBUH) before Hijrah (migration) from MAKKAH to MADINAH refers to MAKKI Surah whereas The Surah which is revealed to our Holy Prophet (PBUH) after HIJRAH (migration) from MAKKAH to MADINA refers to MADANI Surah. But the major Difference between Makki and Madani Surah is the form of address in Makki Surah the form of address is “O PEOPLE and O CHILDREN OF ADAM” on the other hand the form of address in Madani Surah is “O BELIEVERS”.
These surahs are also distinguished from each other on the base of length, the ayats and verses of Makki Surah is short and precise whereas the length of Madani Surah is Long and lengthy.
